Three-dimensional modelling and inversion of controlled source electromagnetic data
The marine Controlled Source Electromagnetic (CSEM) method is an important and almost
self-contained discipline in the toolkit of methods used by geophysicists for probing the earth.
It has increasingly attracted attention from industry during the past decade due to its potential
in detecting valuable natural resources such as oil and gas.
A method for three-dimensional CSEM modelling in the frequency domain is presented. The
electric field is decomposed in primary and secondary components, as this leads to a more
stable solution near the source position. The primary field is computed using a resistivity
model for which a closed form of solution exists, for example a homogeneous or layered
resistivity model. The secondary electric field is computed by discretizing a second order
partial differential equation for the electric field, also referred in the literature as the vector
Helmholtz equation, using the edge finite element method. A range of methods for the solution
of the linear system derived from the edge finite element discretization are investigated.
The magnetic field is computed subsequently, from the solution for the electric field, using
a local finite difference approximation of Faraday’s law and an interpolation method. Tests,
that compare the solution obtained using the presented method with the solution computed
using alternative codes for 1D and 3D synthetic models, show that the implemented approach
is suitable for CSEM forward modelling and is an alternative to existing codes.
An algorithm for 3D inversion of CSEM data in the frequency domain was developed and
implemented. The inverse problem is solved using the L-BFGS method and is regularized
with a smoothing constraint. The inversion algorithm uses the presented forward modelling
scheme for the computation of the field responses and the adjoint field for the computation
of the gradient of the misfit function. The presented algorithm was tested for a synthetic
example, showing that it is capable of reconstructing a resistivity model which fits the synthetic
data and is close to the original resistivity model in the least-squares sense.
Inversion of CSEM data is known to lead to images with low spatial resolution. It is well
known that integration with complementary data sets mitigates this problem. It is presented
an algorithm for the integration of an acoustic velocity model, which is known a priori, in the
inversion scheme. The algorithm was tested in a synthetic example and the results demonstrate
that the presented methodology is promising for the improvement of resistivity models
obtained from CSEM data
Automated segmentation on the entire cardiac cycle using a deep learning work-flow
The segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) from CINE MRI images is essential
to infer important clinical parameters. Typically, machine learning algorithms
for automated LV segmentation use annotated contours from only two cardiac
phases, diastole, and systole. In this work, we present an analysis work-flow
for fully-automated LV segmentation that learns from images acquired through
the cardiac cycle. The workflow consists of three components: first, for each
image in the sequence, we perform an automated localization and subsequent
cropping of the bounding box containing the cardiac silhouette. Second, we
identify the LV contours using a Temporal Fully Convolutional Neural Network
(T-FCNN), which extends Fully Convolutional Neural Networks (FCNN) through a
recurrent mechanism enforcing temporal coherence across consecutive frames.
Finally, we further defined the boundaries using either one of two components:
fully-connected Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) with Gaussian edge potentials
and Semantic Flow. Our initial experiments suggest that significant improvement
in performance can potentially be achieved by using a recurrent neural network
component that explicitly learns cardiac motion patterns whilst performing LV
segmentation.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, published on IEEE Xplor
no ano lectivo 2006/07.
a amostra deste estudo.
This study main objective is to evaluate the potential of the use of Robotics in the teaching
of physics, more specifically in the areas of Sound and Light. The work was developed with the
student population (41 students) which has chosen the Education and Formation Studies (3rd cycle
of studies) at Escola Secundaria de Fafe, in the school year of 2006/07.
When teaching the “Sound and Light” module, experimental activities have been included,
which involved the use Mindstorms NXT robot, gaining an improved learning of the subjects
studied while motivating students to the study of science. Equivalent experimental activities,
without the use of Mindstorms NXT robot, were applied to a different group of students in order
to comparatively conclude about the advantages of the use of educational robotics in this context.
To find which of the two methods has the best results in terms of apprenticeship and development
of social and aptitudinal competences, the same test was applied before and after the
module. Also, in the classroom, the behaviour, participation and commitment/interest of the students
were continuously monitored.
The use of Mindstorms NXT robot had a very positive impact in the students that formed
the sample of this study. It was stated by themselves, in the satisfaction test, that the use of the
robot was the key of their enthusiasm and interest, aside from having a very important role in the
understanding of the concepts of physics approached in class.
In fact, in the classes with experimental activities that involved the Mindstorms NXT robot,
the students were visibly more motivated, which reflected in their interest/commitment, behaviour
and participation in the classes. This was more notorious with the more undisciplined
students and with concentration problems. Through the pre- and post- tests, was found a better
evolution n the group that used the robot: This lead us to believe that the introduction of robot
contributed to better explain the physics’ concepts discussed in these classes
Mercury (Hg) is classified as a priority hazardous substance by the Convention
for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR
Convention), the European Union Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) due
to the combination of its frequency, toxicity and potential effects on human
health and wildlife. In the environment, Hg can be converted into other forms of
Hg (e.g. methylmercury – MeHg). MeHg is a potent neurotoxin, which can
accumulate in the organism’s tissues due to its high rate of absorption by the
gastrointestinal tract and its affinity for thiol groups of proteins. The human
exposure to Hg occurs mainly through the consumption of fish. Despite being
essential for a healthy balanced diet owing to a high content of protein and fatty
acids, fish ingestion can result in the intake of large amounts of Hg since some
species have high Hg levels in their tissues.
Thus, this study presents as central question the evaluation of the distribution,
bioaccumulation and exposure to Hg in different geographic areas located in
the North Atlantic (Portuguese northwest coast, Azores archipelago and
Mexican southwest coast). In this sense, the following specific objectives were
outlined: (i) to determine the presence of Hg in the sediment of coastal areas
from different geographic areas; (ii) to evaluate a potential transfer of the Hg
present in the sediment to the marine food chain; (iii) to assess the effect of
different sea water temperature scenarios on the bioaccumulation and toxicity
of the Hg; (iv) to evaluate the [Hg] present in marine species of commercial
interest in the different coastal areas (fish and squid) and (v) to understand the
contribution of each species to human exposure to Hg.
The results revealed that the Hg concentration in the sediments in the different
areas reflect the proximity to possible sources of contamination by Hg. The fine
fraction is the one with the higher levels of Hg when compared to the fraction of
coarser sediments (sand). However, although in some places these Hg levels
exceed the values established by international agencies through the criteria for
the quality of sediments, the fine fraction represents less than 1% of the total
sediment fraction. Therefore, the Hg concentration present in the total sediment
fraction was found to be below the limits established by the different agencies.
Regarding the transfer of Hg from sediments to the marine trophic chain, the
results showed that levels of Hg present in the studied species do not seem to
be related to the transfer of Hg present in sediments, but rather to the ingestion
of Hg through food.
abstract (cont.) This study also concludes that even in a short-term exposure to low Hg
concentrations, the increase of water temperature can promote the Hg
accumulation in fish. The accumulation was is most evident in the liver. This
increase in the Hg concentration in tissues, as well as the increase of water
temperature, can induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by
the organisms. However, the antioxidant defenses of the liver seem to act
efficiently in combating these ROS, preventing cells damage by oxidative
stress. On the other hand, in the muscle, the fight against ROS was not so
efficient resulting in damage at the proteins’ level and decreased energy
consumption.
Regarding the Hg concentration in different fish species with commercial value,
it was observed that characteristics such as feeding habits and lifestyle, have
an influence on Hg accumulation. Carnivorous fish species are those that have
higher concentrations of Hg, which reinforces the notion that Hg can biomagnify
along the food chain. Finally, considering the Hg accumulation in the different
species of commercial interest and the maximum limit of Hg allowed for human
consumption (of 0.5 µg g-1
), only two fish species (Mora moro and Zeus faber)
showed a Hg concentration above this limit. Despite this, consumption of 14 of
the studied fish species may lead to a weekly intake of Hg greater than 1.3 µg
kg body weight-1 week-1 suggested by JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert
Committee on Food Additives). From these 14 species, 9 concern the Azores
archipelago and 4 the Northwest Portuguese coast, which are areas with a fish
consumption per capita estimated by the FAO three times higher than the
southeast coast of Mexico. In fact, data from the Azores archipelago
demonstrated that the species that contributed the most to human exposure in
this area were those that presented low Hg concentration but were captured in
larger quantities.
Even though Hg is a widely studied contaminant, the results obtained in the
framework of this thesis allowed us to obtain knowledge regarding the
presence of Hg in the North Atlantic coastal areas that provide multiple
ecosystem services and have until now been poorly studied. It also contributes
to the state of the art regarding human exposure to Hg through the
consumption of fish and seafood in risk analysis, since Hg concentration
usually receives greater importance regardless of the fish consumption per
capita.
Finalmente, considerando a
independente do consumo per capita.Programa Doutoral em Biologia e Ecologia das Alterações Globai
Study on the development of an autonomous mobile robot
Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de ComputadoresThis dissertation addresses the subject of Autonomous Mobile Robotics (AMR). It is aimed to evaluate the problems associated with the orientation of the independent vehicles and their technical solutions. There are numerous topics related to the AMR subject. Due to the vast number of topics important for the development of an AMR, it was necessary to dedicate different degrees of attention to each of the topics.
The sensors applied in this research were several, e.g. Ultrasonic Sensor, Inertial Sensor, etc. All of them have been studied within the same environment.
Employing the information provided by the sensors, a map is constructed, and based on this map a trajectory is planned.
The Robot moves, considering the planned trajectory, commanded by a controller based on Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and a specially made model of the robot, through a Kalman Filter (KF).
Some of the researched topics were implemented in a real robot in an unstructured environment, collecting measurement data. A final conclusion is indicating the future direction of development
Love me do, love me don't : factor drivers, development and consequences of brand love : a comparison between Portugal and the USA
Assim, gestores e
Consumers usually refer to their favorite brands as brands they love, and love, as some would
say, is all you need. Consequently, managers and researchers rushed to develop the idea of
brand love. Today, this concept is currently used as a holistic term that is linked to several
intense emotions combined with an intense purchase or usage experience that results in
positive behaviors.
Nevertheless, this valuable notion remains yet to become an established consensual
marketing construct. In addition, the state-of-the-art knowledge does not allow neither
managers nor researchers to understand if the foundations or dimensional aspects of brand
love vary from one brand to another or from one country to another. That is the goal of the
present research. It aims to characterize brand love dimensions, its impact on market outcome
variables and compare the results of brands from different categories and consumers from
entirely different countries.
Using structural equation modeling on survey data, we propose a brand love model consisting
of a higher order emotional dimension passion and first order dimensions such as
commitment, self-personality brand integration and long-term perspective. The model
includes market outcomes such as brand loyalty, positive word of mouth and brand
commitment as consequences of brand love. Our results allow us to propose model and
market outcomes differences identified across location and brand category and we discuss
how coherent they are with the organizational and cultural differences put forward by
Hofstede.
We conclude this research by presenting theoretical and managerial implications on brand
building and marketing activities
On the night of 25 to 26 November 1967, heavy rains swept over some regions of

Lubricants for Mechanical Equipments and Innovation in the Sector
Lubricants are substances placed between two movable surfaces or a fixed and a movable one, forming a protective film whose main function is to reduce friction, wear, temperature and sealing of machine and motor components, and may also be a force transmission agent And movement. Therefore the objective of this work is to contribute to the construction of materials on the subject, aiming to analyze the types of lubricants, their characteristics, as well as the innovation in the sector. Thus, the applied methodology is mainly a literature review followed by an analysis. It should be noted that each type of lubricant is important for different types of equipment but is not yet in the state of the art and new technologies such as liquid crystal must be developed, which is highly efficient but still has a very high cost
